Ways to create emotion in a photo
We were asked in class today how to create emotion thriugh a photo of a non-living object. I have three ways I think it may be acheived.
1. I think the surroundings of a non-living object helps create the emotion of it. (I.E. the weather, the colors of the object, etc. )
2. The focus on the object.
3. Lighting

3 of Edward Tufte Design Concepts
-
Color
So bacically, Edward Tufte believed that color could inhance the comprehension of data. He had some main beliefs about colors, and I’m going to list the ones I can relate to or understand.
- Use color as the main identifier on computer screens as different objects are often considered the same if they have the same color regardless of their shape, size , or purpose.
- Contour lines that change color based on the background standout without producing the 1+1=3 effects.
- Colors can be used as labels, as measures, and to imitate reality (e.g., blue lakes in maps).
Graphics
He believed that there is some instances when you don’t use graphics.
-
Simple graphs don’t need it! Comparitive data uses it, mostly.
-
Posters should be used for graphs because the should be what you are paying attention to. The poster will distract you from the graph.
Chartjunk
Chartjunk is pictures and other items used on a chart that have no purpose or theat may cause confusion.

Waking Life
In class today we watched a movie called Making Life. I can’t really explain what the movie was about yet because we have only watched five minutes of it. Though, it looked to be a very interesting movie.
While watching the movie I noticed that it was originally made with actual people but then was remade on Photoshop. I found it very interesting that it was remade with the pen tool, which is commonly used in the classroom, and that it incorporated animated movement as well. The shadows on the people and the different objects brought the animation to life.
The question was asked why we think that it was animated instead of using actual people. I think that it was animated because the makers thought it would look cooler, which it did, and that it was more creative that way. In my opinion it brought the motion picture to life more than actual people would. The animation emphasized all of the movements.
Just from seeing five minutes of the movie, I realized the amazing talent that can come out of working with Photoshop.
